architecture in chile

Since the 1990s, architecture in Chile has been undergoing a radical transformation. New studios and talented architects have started writing the modern chapter in the country’s history. On this page, you can find some of the latest architectural projects completed in Chile. Inspired by tradition and often made with rustic materials, these dwellings are nevertheless distinctly modern. From weekend retreats to farmhouses, compact cabins and homes with multiple volumes, here you can find the best of contemporary architecture in Chile.

Built in natural settings, these houses provide access to breathtaking views of Chile’s spectacular landscapes; from rushing rivers and mirror-like lakes to majestic mountains, arid planes, and pine forests. The dwellings also minimize their impact on the land. Whether elevated on pillars, integrated in the topography of the site, or built around existing trees, these architectural projects respect nature in more ways than one. Chilean architects also favor natural materials, especially locally sourced wood. A majority of these houses feature wooden cladding – whether with a natural finish, left untreated so it will turn silvery-gray over time, or darkened with a black finish.

Designed with gabled forms that remind of traditional barns or with contemporary angular shapes and asymmetrical volumes, these projects represent the modern architecture in Chile at its best. Here you can find an array of architectural designs, one more gorgeous than the other. A small cabin built with wood, mesh, and polycarbonate recreates the beauty of a woodland in an architectural form; the wood represents the trees, while the mesh and the transparent panels represent the leaves and the light, respectively. A sprawling family retreat built in a lush forest resembles a tree house. Another dwelling references traditional Chilean houses in a contemporary design. Large deck areas, terraces, and gardens connect all of these living spaces to nature.
