The Beaubien by Lambert & Fils

Montréal-based lighting design studio Lambert & Fils makes their US debut with the Beaubien, a versatile fixture that can function as a floor, wall, or hanging lamp. First shown during the 27th International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City, the sleek graphic form lies on the border of the two and three dimensional worlds, drawing inspiriation from traditional Chinese screens. The universal design references both modernism as well as the somewhat infamous Memphis movement of the 1980s through its aluminum and powder coated steel and brass construction. While the finished product undeniably has a place in high-end environments due to its expensive look and feel, the accessible simplicity of the design makes it suitable for a variety of settings. Lambert’s attention to the decorative aesthetic is almost contradictory to the well-known design principle that states “form follows function;” in his work, “light is accessory.” Now available for purchase in the US at Haute Living (Chicago), House of Honey (California), and Property (New York), each locally-designed and hand-finished piece brings the same dedication to detail that one might expect from a work of fine art. The Beaubien transcends expectations in a sculptural design that displays light through an elegantly minimal application of line; we can’t wait to see what else Lambert & Fils has in store.
