The Stirling House: A Contemporary Home in a Heritage Area

View all 11 Photos

Called the Stirling House, this contemporary terraced home was built in a heritage conservation area in Sydney, Australia. The MAC Interactive Architects construction replaces two derelict cottages and serves as a home for a growing family. The clients wanted neither “a white box minimalist house” nor an overly stylized space that would clash with their collection of artwork and designer furniture. This curious home with a diagonal rooftop answers their wishes.

Like the former cottages, the home is clad in horizontal planks of gray wood. The two large front-facing windows wrap around the corner of the house, giving the facade a sort of cutaway aesthetic. Looking over the backyard, there are two glass walls stacked one atop of the other and split where the two stories divide. Inside, there nooks and other features such as a floor-to-ceiling fireplace to vary the shape of the rooms and splashes of blue and yellow to brighten the otherwise white walls.
