Tomogram Toys – Playing With Design

Throughout the world, many iconic toys have been crafted using wood lathes, including the famous Kokeshi and Matryoshka dolls. Tomogram is a product design studio that brings this traditional manufacturing method into the modern world with a series of toys that encourage creativity and user interaction. The founders of the studio, Taewoo Kim and Minwoo Lee, have designed the toys to both distinctive and easily to customize in order to allow the owner to express his or her own individuality.

The four components include the legs, torso, head, and a nose or mouth; all of them come in numerous shapes and colors and can be arranged in various combinations to create a one-of-a-kind toy with a modern design. Unlike classic lathe-made toys, this series is manufactured from a wider range of materials. The studio created wood, metal, cement, and resin components, each featuring its own colors and finishes. Paint can also be applied to give the objects a more distinctive appearance and to enhance the DIY aspect of the collection. Along with the assembly stage, this finishing process references childhood play and unleashes creativity through one of the most fundamental human activities. Photo credits: Tomogram.
