The Tool Cabinet of Curiosity

A thought-provoking exploration of the meaning of craftsmanship.

Created by designer Aaron Garlick, the Tool Cabinet of Curiosity project analyzes the concept of traditional craft in the digital world. With a background in both fine-furniture making and digital design, Aaron Garlick offers a fresh take on a fascinating subject. The Tool Cabinet of Curiosity is part of the designer’s master’s degree graduation project in Contextual Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Made of polyester resin and aluminum, the cabinet boasts acrylic high definition 3D prints which depict various hand tools. The concept aims to explore the role of the artisan in the digital era as well as the implementation of digital processes in contemporary design.

As the meaning of craft changes over time, so do the various ways in which designers create their work. While some still favor traditional methods, increasingly more creatives turn to cutting-edge techniques. Aaron Garlick’s cabinet is thought-provoking, encouraging the viewer to ponder the meaning of “handmade” in the modern world. The 120 3D printed miniatures depict an array of tools with deep roots in traditional craftsmanship. Therefore, the designer establishes a dialogue between two eras.

At the same time, Aaron Garlick highlights the paradigm shift currently happening in the craft and design industry. Referencing classic cabinets and handcrafted objects, the Tool Cabinet of Curiosity provides a glimpse into a new age of contemporary design. The project announces the inevitable evolution of craft: a (near) future in which artisanal and digital processes will coexist in harmony. Photographs© Nicole Marnati.
