Velo Chair By Jan Waterston

The Velo Chair designed by Jan Waterston is a great example of how good design and a creative concept can reinvent an everyday item to lend it an intriguing beauty. A fundamentally static object, the chair, has been redefined here as a dynamic piece of furniture that is a functional item as much as it is an illustration of exquisite craftsmanship and creativity. The overall shape of the chair, flowing and transforming as it envelops the body of the person using it, is inspired by modern bicycles. “This relationship between body and object is echoed in bicycle design with tubes flowing seamlessly into one another, constantly changing shape, to improve function and aesthetic”, says the designer. The hand sculpted chair is made of ash wood and features a seamless construction. Various elements blend into one another, making the bent backrest and the slim legs seem crafted from a single piece of wood, in a beautiful design that gives a ubiquitous object a sculptural appearance.
