Worldbeing: A Desperately Needed Solution

In the past two hundred years, our species has become remarkably adept at exploiting the resources available to us here on the Earth. However, one key issue remains; it’s almost impossible for us to comprehend the immeasurable value of rapidly depleting oil deposits and fossilized carbon that takes millions of years to form, meanwhile the importance of living systems that so often receive the brunt of our error goes largely ignored. But visionary designer Benjamin Hubert of Layer Design believes it’s time to reverse our negative impact on the planet we call home.

Unlike many environmental solutions that call for a complete transformation of contemporary life, Worldbeing enters your subconscious, “empowering you to make better decisions to help halt climate change.”

Worldbeing” is a modern wearable that tracks daily energy usage – much like a fitbit might track calorie intake – and records it through a mobile app. Unlike many environmental solutions that call for a complete transformation of contemporary life, Worldbeing enters your subconscious, “empowering you to make better decisions to help halt climate change.” With support from the Carbon Trust, Layer’s takes a forward-thinking approach using the tools of the present. Daily footprint targets keep you on track while an integrated social network lets you share your progress and compete with your friends, recording your methods of transportation, food and drink consumption, and general energy expenditure. Essentially, the app takes advantage of our competitive nature to motivate users; whoever maintains the smallest footprint is rewarded virtually and, ultimately, through their actions in real life. “The app has the potential to increase understanding and stimulate action by intuitively communicating and linking our daily activities and decisions to their impacts on the climate.” Drawing on their extensive UI and UX experience, the team at Layered came up with a simple, unobtrusive wristband compatible with the conventional smart device, which they believe has the potential to “inspire a movement and transform the world” as it finds its way into everyday life.
