Zeb Pilot House the Zero-Emission Show-Home by Snøhetta

This show-home in Larvik, Norway, was created by Snøhetta for Optimera and Brødrene Dahl. The sustainable design is one of many coming from the architecture firm that brought this wild reindeer pavilion and these beehive condos into the world, and it shows the level of finesse that one might expect. As part of Snøhetta’s partnership with the ZEB (The Research Center on Zero Emission Buildings), the pilot house has a minimal carbon footprint. The property generates enough energy to power the two volumes (one flat-roofed and the other asymmetrical) and an electric car all throughout the year. Modeling eco-friendly options for family homes, the unique design makes use of solar panels, a timber thermal mass layer, strategically placed windows, a brick atrium for even more passive energy, rainwater collection, gray water, and geothermal wells. Additionally, there is an orchard and garden, encouraging small-scale farming, and a deck and pool, making room for leisure outdoors. Photography by Bruce Damonte
