Albion Barn

Located in Oxford, UK, in the Conservation Area of Little Milton, Old Belchers Farm is a beautiful 17th century farmhouse with a Historic Interest Building Status. The property includes the main house, barns, stables, and a courtyard. London-based Studio Seilern Architects was hired to convert the interior of the main barn into a modern space with a contemporary art gallery, exhibition areas, and a library. The latter is located at the center of Albion Barn, hidden behind four doors which double as bookshelves. The room is cleverly designed to create an optical illusion; the walls are lined with bookshelves, while the ceiling is made of mirrored polished steel. The effect of books extending to infinity is surreal, especially as the room’s lighting is soft and warmed by a pink hue, accentuating the sense of comfort and intimacy. By contrast, the gallery and exhibition space have immaculate white walls and are filled with natural light, in a bright and airy ambience that lets the contemporary artworks take center stage.
