Avaunt Magazine – Issue 03

Founded by Ben Saunders and Dan Crowe, Avaunt provides a different take on the magazine concept, with five pillars standing at its core: adventure, style, innovation, nature, and culture. The name is originally a Middle English word and its broader meaning of ‘to move forward, to advance or to elevate’, appealed to Saunders and Crowe, as it implies constant movement and exploration. “We will bring you stories from respected writers and thinkers, concerning adventures in technology, music, science, style and culture, alongside insights from the pioneers and innovators who are shaping our new world”, the magazine says.

The third issue of the magazine features several stories about women explorers, adventurers, or pioneers. Tara Isabella Burton has written a piece on Devi Asmadiredja, the woman forced to leave her life in Germany behind only to rediscover herself in the Caucasus Mountains and to find her home in the wilderness, among caves, cliffs, and peaks. There is also an article on the women training at the Honved Fencing Academy in Budapest, accompanied by compelling photographs taken by celebrated photographer Nick Ballon, His Bolivian heritage influences most of his work, whether it’s a theme of belonging to a certain place or series of images directly connected to the country. Ballon’s book Ezekiel 36:36 paints a portrait of Bolivia’s national airline and it was named by TIME as one of the best photography books of 2013. Other articles in this third issue include a piece on Cousteau meeting Castro and an article chronicling the adventures of Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge.
