Challenging the typical perception of a table as a plane supported by four legs, Damien Gernay presents an alternative formal definition through Beam Tables. A plane is ceremoniously intersected with a wooden pedestal, the cantilevered surface serving as the tabletop – asymmetrical yet precariously balanced. Similarly, Gernay continues his foray on stereotypes by exploring materiality. In Textured Sideboard, a white set of drawers is sullied by wood-textured paint drips, which surely turns the idea of painting and staining a piece of furniture on its head. Both pieces are loud works in their composition and motivation – so be prepared for your ordinary furniture to raise an objection or two.
