Bread from Scratch by Mirko Ihrig

“Bread from Scratch” is a collection of bread making tools by industrial designer Mirko Ihrig. Inspired by the slow food movement, the design series celebrates knowing the origins of what’s on one’s plate. Ihrig chose to focus on bread in particular because of its cultural value. Bread is ancient, and its numerous variations are eaten by people in almost every country on earth. Given bread’s role in human history, it’s no wonder that the loaf is a symbol of sustenance itself. Defending bread against its modern-day association with fast food, Ihrig designed his own version of the tools traditionally used to prepare bread, including a mill, bowl, board, paddle, and oven. The oven is the most distinct piece in the collection, with orange clay charred from firing. Its vibrant color and modern design tell anyone who admires it that the old way of making bread has a place in today’s world.
