Casa RP: A Chilean Villa with a View

Called Casa RP, this home in Vichuquén, Chile, was designed by CMA Arquitectos. The rectangular structure stretches out lengthwise for prime views of the surrounding landscape. Terraces run along the outside, and an interior corridor reaches from one end to the other, enhancing the sense of fluidity inside and outside the pavilion-like villa. The horizontal lines of the wood cladding and the interior walls also contribute to the sense of flowing toward the horizon. Inside the home, wood and concrete predominate, establishing a neutral, self-consciously natural color palette. The shades of brown and gray are echoed outside, in the man-made stone pathway, but not in the land and water, which, on a bright summer’s day at least, are deep brown, green, and blue. Contrasting with nature, the house is actually more muted than the environment. Large windows and a series of skylights frame views of the lake, the forest, and the sky, bringing natural light into the home and defining the aesthetic experience.
