Concrete Sculptures By David Umemoto

Inspired – at least in part – by mid-century brutalist architecture, David Umemoto’s concrete sculptures explore volume and form through both simple and complex compositions. But beyond their bold appearance, the artworks have a deeper meaning. The architect and sculptor creates the sculptures as miniature buildings that reference both archaic monuments and remnants of modern structures.

Handmade, each sculpture consists of several pieces which fit together in a puzzle. The modular artworks thus evolve and transform, reminding of the constant cycle of building, destruction and rebirth. Thought-provoking and intriguing, the concrete structures bring various scenarios to mind. From primordial dwellings to buildings of a utopian future – the artworks create a dialogue between solidity and the ephemeral. Their rough surface and intentionally imperfect finish displays the artist desire to celebrate simplicity as well as hands-on creative processes.
