Architects Magnus Maarbjerg of Danish design studio Fokstrot and Copenhagen-based Australian Marshall Blecher have completed the first phase of their ambitious project which re-imagines public parks in a creative way. Copenhagen Islands brings a new range of public spaces into the city’s harbor area. The project aims to create a sequence of wooden platforms brought together in a mobile, floating “Parkipelago.”
The first structure of the proposed nine is a 20-square-meter prototype island. Handmade from wood using sustainable and locally sourced materials, it features a linden tree growing from its deck area. It’s a space where swimmers, kayakers as well as adventurous sunbathers can relax in peace away from the city streets.
The other structures will include a floating sauna, a bar/coffee shop and a swimming platform as well as a stage, a flower and herb garden, and a miniature park. Although separate, the islands can easily connect to each other for larger events, such as summer festivals. The concept highlights the reduction in recreational spaces caused by rapid urban development as well as the new challenges presented by rising sea levels.
