The Custom 1983 BMW R80 G/S Myth 001 Bike

An adventure bike customized with Dakar-inspired details.

Born in Barcelona, designer, photographer, and bike builder Matias Corea moved to Brooklyn in 2002. 14 years later, he realized an old dream by riding 20,000 miles from NYC to the southern tip of Argentina on a BMW R80 G/S bike. Back home, he published a book about his adventure: Two Wheels South: A Motorcycle Adventure from Brooklyn to Ushuaia. He also set out to perfect the bike and make it an even better traveling companion. Completed by his own workshop Myth Motor, the custom 1983 BMW R80 G/S ‘Myth 001’ bike is specially designed for long tours around the world. Chosen for its versatility and widespread availability of suitable parts, the bike allows the user to easily repair it on the road. The build also incorporates Dakar-inspired details that enhance its adventurous vibe.

The custom bike now features a more powerful engine as well as better torque. While the engine originally had a capacity of 797cc, it now has 1001cc and a horsepower output of 72 hp. Strengthened with a series of reinforcing parts, the chassis can now handle the demands of journeys of thousands of miles. Re-balanced to work better with the more powerful engine, the crankshaft, flywheel, rods, and pistons ensure a smooth throttle response. A Siebenrock GS2 exhaust, an open rally air filter, and Bings carbs enhance the engine’s efficiency.

The custom WP open chamber forks have 250mm of travel, but the user can upgrade them up to 300mm. At the front, the bike boasts a 21” Takasago Excel rim with a Talon aluminum hub and heavy-duty stainless spokes, while at the rear, it features an 18-inch Excel rim. Mitas E-07 dual sport tires complete these adventure-ready wheels.

The integrated Hepco Becker luggage rack at the rear comes with 30 and 40 liter Xplorer panniers. Made by HPN, the 11.3-gallon tank features a custom unpainted section to offer a clear view of the fuel level. Other features include bespoke Dakar-inspired fenders, Magura handlebars, LED fog lights, an USB port, and a paint job completed by Peach Pit Motorcycle Painting.
