Daunt’s Albatross

The redesign of a family-owned retreat located right next to the beach.

Run since 1977 by the Daunt family, the Daunt’s Albatross motel in Montauk, New York, has been transformed into a stylish beach retreat by Brooklyn-based architecture and interior design firm Home Studios. The studio redesigned the dated interiors and outdoor areas, ultimately creating a chic boutique hotel that welcomes guests in stylish spaces close to the beach. The refurbishment project references the region’s pristine coastal landscapes and wild nature. At the same time, the team wanted to create a cozy, shelter-like space that offers comfort and warmth. The property comprises two buildings that create a spacious courtyard in the center.

Home Studios used a blend of reclaimed materials and vintage and antique items for this project. The reception area boasts reclaimed oak ceilings and flagstone flooring as well as a custom limestone and wood desk. The rooms feature the same blend of stone and wood, but each suite has a distinct character and design. Antique items give the rooms the look and feel of a family home filled with treasured, heirloom items. Shades of blue and sandy brown hues reference the coastal area, with darker accents adding contrast and a contemporary flavor.

The studio used artworks and handmade textiles to complete the spaces. Both the palette of colors which includes warm grays, pastels, and deeper blues and the materials’ textures give a nod to the setting. Guests can stay in standard rooms or larger suites that also offer access to kitchenettes, fireplaces, and balconies. Outside, guests can relax in the courtyard or use the swimming pool. The area also invites them to go out and explore, with the beach, surfing spots, hiking trails, and state parks within walking or short driving distance away from the motel.
