Despite being the design genius behind extravagant projects such as The Shard and the Pompidou Centre, Renzo Piano maintains a keen awareness of the usefulness of space and demonstrates this consideration with the work-in-progress Diogene. Christened after the philosopher Diogenes who was said to have made a barrel his ascetic abode, the minimalist house at the Vitra Campus offers a space for spiritual silence within its simple, self-contained form. Behind its aluminum panels and within the rounded corners of the retreat, a warm wooden interior supports the sustainable simple life, accomplished by the careful engineering and planning of plumbing and wiring as revealed through a classic exploded axonometric… furniture included.
