Romont, Switzerland
Founded in 2019 by David Bard and Thibault Yersin, the Romont-based office works almost entirely in rural Fribourg, where 18th-century farmhouses, cheese dairies, and village schools face steady pressure for change. Their answer is to keep the type and upgrade the life inside it. A hay loft becomes a light-catching living room; a cowshed floor is lifted just enough to tuck in insulation without losing the smell of pine boards; a dairy gains a low-energy timber wing that reads as if it had always been there.
Projects—La Cretâ farmhouse conversion, a vocational-school extension, a concrete TV bench cast in backyard formwork—start with site walks and full-scale timber mock-ups, then run through the studio’s single open model until structure, daylight, and budget line up. Instagram posts double as field notes, showing joints tested in the yard before they head to site.
By treating every commission as a lesson in typology and resource, Bard Yersin crafts buildings that feel inevitable next to their barns and pastures yet meet today’s comfort, energy, and seismic codes.
