Porto, Potugal
Lisbon-based architect, artist, and curator Hugo Santos Silva treats every site as a working lab. Armed with camera, video, and field recorders, he follows light, ownership, and memory along Portugal’s reservoir banks, fenced estates, and half-finished suburbs, then folds the evidence into drawings, essays, and gallery installations.
Recent curatorial work—such as A Substância das Coisas (NOTE, Lisbon 2023)—invites architects to unpack a single building through fragments: mock-ups, sound loops, and annotated models. The goal, he says, is to “listen first, frame later,” whether he’s photographing sea mist along a concrete beam or mapping desire paths across private farmland. Across media the method stays constant: capture the pause that hints at another use, another future.
