Ductile Assembly By Tim Teven Studio

An ingeniously simple shelving system that uses two materials in an unconventional way.

Created by Tim Teven as one of his graduation projects at Design Academy Eindhoven, Ductile Assembly blends experimental design with techniques inspired by traditional manufacturing. The shelving system uses two industrial materials in a clever way. The designer took inspiration from artisan shaping methods as well as traditional connecting techniques for the project. He also used two different industrial materials that complement each other. The ingenious design helps to create a strong bond between the two elements, eliminating the need to use any adhesives or hardware.

To create Ductile Assembly, the designer deformed acrylic sheets by applying heat, a step that also stiffened the material. Using heat, he pushed the aluminum tubing through the acrylic before leaving the structure to cool down. As the two materials cooled, they fused with one another to provide stability and a reliable storage and display solution for various items. Thanks to the modular possibilities of the design, the shelving system can grow from one unit to multiple connected units.
