Furniture Design With Meaning: Stool – Jasper Morrison x Wataru Kumano

Some pieces of furniture look beautiful. Others also have a deeper meaning behind their elegant aesthetic and modern furniture design. Case in point? The Stool series, designed by one of our favorites, Jasper Morrison, in collaboration with product and furniture designer Wataru Kumano. The collection celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Japanese forest conservation program More Trees. Co-founded by musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, the non-profit organization aims to restore the world’s forests to their old glory, starting with Japan.

To make the Stool collection, the designers chose Hinoki wood, sourced from one of More Trees’ sustainable forests. Used in temples, the wood links the contemporary designs with tradition and the country’s past. Craftsmanship and natural materials as well as clean, modern lines combine in a furniture design that ultimately blends into any living space. The Stool series comes in three sizes: single, double, and long. Gorgeous on their own, the three stools come together as a set, creating a dynamic relationship between the different pieces at the same time. The series was recently introduced at this year’s Maison&Objet in Paris.
