Located in a woodland area of the beautiful Karuizawa resort town in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, Camouflage House connects its living spaces to the surrounding landscape in a creative way. This striking greenhouse residence was designed by architect Hiroshi Iguchi, founder of the Fifth World studio which focuses on eco-friendly projects and sustainability. Made of glass and steel, the structure creates a dialogue between the interior and nature. Light floods in from literally everywhere. Sunshine remains captured in the rooms during the winter months, while during summer white canvas panels slide over the glass to keep the heat away.
The minimal décor enhances the Zen-like ambience. Dark wooden floors contrast the bright white walls. Lounge areas and indoor garden spaces allow the inhabitants to relax and to contemplate the beauty of nature at the same time. Integrated into the greenhouse residence’s layout, a few trees continue to grow through openings in the ceilings, becoming a part of the house. Photographs© Alessio Guarino.
