Henhouse by Torsten Ottesjo

Henhouse is a tender addition to this Sweedish landscape. It was built by architect Torston Ottesjo for a neighbor who admired his work.

The tremendous arch roof that hugs the hen home below resembles a wing. Just as the mother hen gathers her peeps to huddle safely beneath her wings, so this home greets them with the same warm welcome. It speaks of the way the farmer loves his animals, cares for them and gives them the respect they deserve providing for their family. The details in this unmatchable coop reveal the potential for farming to be desirable. And I’m sure the the hen’s won’t mind if I speak for them that this place is awesome.

These lucky birds enjoy a view of a serene hilltop with a peaceful stream running by. A thin steel frame supports the entire structure as it sits on a steep incline. The hens freely roam all around beneath and in between these frames.  It is built to suit them with several ramp entrances and a front stoop. They roost inside on natural branches.  The earthy green doors lead to eggs resting inside. Behind the hen house the roof displays a similar pattern to that of feathers.  Each tile lay against the other in an authentic way along the curve of the wing roof.  In the evening, artificial lighting encourages the egg laying process. This glow serves like nature’s night light as all the details in the design are fully revealed.
