This contemporary home can be found in the ground floor and cellar of a medieval building in the heart of Gubbio in Umbria, Italy. Renovated by the architecture firm Menichetti + Caldarelli, the space honors its history while incorporating the conveniences of today. The added and existing elements complement one another. The polish of the new floors brings attention to the texture of the old brick ceilings. Those same arched ceilings give dimension to the interior lighting. Other notable changes can be found in the living room, which is lined with panels for a transitional effect, and in the cellar, which was converted into a private spa. The transformations find the balance between restraint and drama, creating a space that is liveable and worthy of admiration.
