House in Kutná Hora

A thoughtful redesign and modernization of a 19th century house.

The renovation of an aged residence in Kutná Hora, the Czech Republic, represents a thorough transformation of a building with a storied past. Initially a medieval structure, it was later replaced in the late 19th century, followed by extensive modifications in the 1970s that significantly altered its original character. The architects faced the challenge of reintegrating the building’s historical layers with new, contemporary elements in the complete renovation project.

Under the guidance of Jan Holub and Tomáš Hanus from Studio BYRÓ architekti, the renovation focused on intertwining the old and the new. The team achieved this through the thoughtful placement of interior windows and openings, which enhance brightness and also foster a sense of connection and flow among the spaces. This design philosophy improved the internal dynamics of the house, adapting it for a family with three children.

A central feature of the house, a spiral staircase acts as a pivotal link between floors. The staircase weaves a thread from past to present, retaining the original stone between the ground and upper floors while introducing a contemporary steel section on the ascent to the attic. A skylight atop the staircase bathes the interior in natural light, illuminating the heart of the home.

A subtle palette, artistic accents and custom details come together in a creative decor.

The project effectively utilizes both light and color to shape the atmosphere of the house. The exterior boasts a subtle aesthetic, while the interior showcases a dynamic color scheme. Put together in close collaboration with the clients, the palette features a selection of thoughtfully chosen shades and accents. The majority of the furniture in the home is custom-designed by the studio, adding a personal touch to the space.

The layout of the house revolves around the central staircase. Used primarily for storage, the basement remains largely unchanged. The ground floor includes an entrance hall, a children’s playroom with a bathroom, and service areas like a laundry room. This level also contains Dan art workshop. The upper floor houses the main living space, kitchen, master bedroom, and an additional workroom. Dedicated to the children, the attic features separate bedrooms and another bathroom. Finally, the property also includes a renovated courtyard and garden. The residents can conveniently access the outdoor space from both the basement and the upper floor’s new terrace.
