House NF by Didonè Comacchio Architects

A tranquil home designed with two courtyards and windows that open to an olive grove.

On the outskirts of Bassano del Grappa, Italy, House NF by Didonè Comacchio Architects stands as a calming presence at the foothills of the Alps. It’s a place where the surrounding whispers of nature from the nearby UNESCO site, Monte Grappa, and the serene landscapes of the Asiago plateau, meld seamlessly with every nook and cranny of the home.

Walking into the residence feels like stepping into a living, breathing space. The concrete house effortlessly pulls nature inside, painting every room with shades of the vibrant greens and tranquil blues from the surrounding landscape. The two courtyards on the lower level open like windows to the world outside, catching snapshots of the ever-changing dance of the leaves and the wind.

The entrance courtyard shields the home from prying eyes, creating a private haven within, while subtly inviting the hues of the garden and the surrounding olive grove into the living spaces. Above, a small study, a peaceful retreat, opens up to reveal the panoramic vistas, thus becoming a serene spot to watch the world go by.

To a passerby, the house appears reserved. A playful partition of wooden slats hides the interiors while allowing hints of light to play on the façade. This understated elegance and playful game of hide-and-seek create a sense of intrigue, a gentle invitation to explore further.

Inside, the studio blurred the boundary between the inside and outside. The olive grove feels like a part of the living room, its swaying branches whispering stories of the ancient land. At the same time, the grove becomes a calming backdrop to everyday life. This constant bond with nature creates a soothing atmosphere within the house.

The material palette also pays homage to the surroundings. While the textures of the exposed concrete walls and floors remind of the mountainous setting, the wooden shutters bring hints of the outside trees. This house is a serene escape where every detail, every corner gently reminds of the beauty that surrounds it, inviting those within to pause, breathe, and feel at home. Photography by Simone Bossi.
