Ice Cream Series By José Lourenço

More than just a playful chromatic study, the Ice Cream Series also features some subtle psychological undertones. An impossible to ingest item becomes appetizing simply by being associated with a popular sweet treat. Created by Lisbon-based José Lourenço, the images display the artist’s penchant for deconstructing ideas and presenting objects in unexpected scenarios. Painting brushes dipped in multicolored paint set against neutral or pastel-colored backdrops bring summer to mind.

The brushes boast swirling pigments as well as a glossy surface, providing a surreal parallel to an refreshing ice cream. Vibrant and eye-catching, the photos aim to please the eye while also challenging perception of simple, everyday objects. The palette ranges from lighter yellows and oranges to darker reds, magenta, green, and blue. One might wonder what the paint would look like spread on a blank canvas. But here, the brushes fulfill their purpose – away from the white surface. Photographs© José Lourenço.
