What does time-space and spiders share in common? In addition to both being fascinations of Tomás Saraceno, the two play important roles in the artist’s most expansive exhibit to date: In Orbit. Saraceno translates the structural technicalities of the spider’s intricate and insanely strong web to an experience for his audience. Above the piazza of the K21 Ständehaus, a net hangs suspended and invites visitors to experience weightlessness and a simulated flight along a 2500 square-meter plane. Three levels of this ethereal landscape are separated by clear spheres crafted from PVC and atmosphere. The lightness and perceived simplicity of it all is upheld by background complexities and over 3000 kilograms of structural support; then again, this illusion is precisely the magic that Tomás Saraceno practices best.
