Infrared NYC by Paolo Pettigiani

Central Park has been photographed and filmed so many times it has become familiar to people from around the world, even to those who have never walked on its trails. Paolo Pettigiani, a young Italian photographer and graphic designer living in New York, has created a series of images that put this popular place in a completely new light. As they are shot with an infrared filter, the images have a distinct magical atmosphere and feature pinkish and red hues which are reminiscent of Richard Mosse‘s work. The Irish conceptual photojournalist is well-known for his striking series of photographs taken in East Congo, an area ravaged by war. But if Mosse documents conflict through a juxtaposition between a harsh reality and painterly beauty, Pettigiani aims to highlight the majestic beauty of nature in contrast to New York’s iconic skyline. The lush vegetation, now in shades of coral pink and light red, complements the cool blue and gray tones found in the skyscrapers and the sky.
