Introducing By Humankind

Personal care products, redefined for the eco-conscious consumer.

Around a third of all single-use plastic waste that reaches landfills comes from personal care products, with up to 28,000 tons of single-use plastic polluting the oceans, every day. Brian Bushell and Joshua Goodman decided to do something about it. They co-founded By Humankind, an eco-conscious company that aims to reduce single-plastic packaging waste. To do this, the startup has developed a simple and efficient concept: a subscription service that provides refills for personal care items. Customers can subscribe to By Humankind’s service and receive their first products in plastic containers along with a first refill, with refills sent afterwards on a regular basis, as needed. Since they’re made of plastic, the containers last for a lifetime and they are conveniently easy to refill.

By Humankind currently has three products on offer: shampoo, deodorant, and mouthwash, all made with clean, simple ingredients. The deodorant has an advanced formula that provides an antibacterial effect with natural ingredients. On the first order, the customers can choose the color of the refillable container from four options. Looking like a bar of soap, the natural shampoo eliminates the need for a single-use plastic container. Vegan and gluten-free as well as ethically-made, the By Humankind shampoo comes in thyme, lemongrass, or lemon lavender options.

The mouthwash comes as compact tablets that dissolve in water, with light or dark blue containers available. Of course, all of the products sent by the brand come in environmentally-friendly packaging. On top of all this, By Humankind will also donate $1 from the first purchase of a reusable container to remove plastic from the world’s oceans. Photographs© By Humankind.
