Not many speakers look like gorgeous decorative or sculptural objects, but this design certainly does. Created by Tokyo-based studio Nendo for Japanese homeware brand Bunaco, the wireless speaker features a blend of contemporary design and ingenious woodworking techniques. Based in Aomori, a region with an abundance of beech trees, Bunaco crafts a range of products using a special manufacturing process. The company cuts beech wood into thin 1mm-thick strips, coiling the ribbon-like material into a base that is both water-resistant and durable. This technique also minimizes distortions – a perfect solution for audio products.
The Nendo X Bunaco Wireless Speaker produces a crystal clear tone thanks to the sound absorbing qualities of beech wood. The cone shape also enhances these qualities. Designed as an omni-directional speaker with a vertical diaphragm, the speaker optimizes the spatial distribution of the sound. At the same time, it also improves the acoustics. A clear acrylic cylinder envelops the wood cone, putting the skilled craftsmanship of the Bunaco technique on display.
