Nutcrackers Mannequins by Jennifer Rubell

Just what we’ve always wanted. A bunch of nuts to crush between our legs. Yeah, we might wear lipstick, take an hour blowdrying our hair straight. So what if we breast feed in public, make more money than our spouse, or use our sexuality to get what we want. What? Like that never happens.

Flashing their boobs and spreading their legs, the lady mannequins are caught teasing audience members into the gallery. In the way that only women can manipulate with their sexual powers, the army of females entice, capitalize on their strength in numbers, arrest everyone memorized. This installation by Jennifer Rubell in the Dallas Contemporary‘s largest gallery features 18 life size interactive female nutcrackers. Posed on their sides, they are fresh nude, and ready for action. One ton of Texas pecans are piled high in the centered square bin. Onlookers can grab a handful of snack, set them into the girl’s inner thigh and push down the handle to crack the shell. Happily eat part of the art, it’s an active roll we can do to complete the piece. Integrating our five senses of sight, touch, sound, smell, taste we experience the representation of mighty women.
