Organically Shaped Rattan Sofa by Hiroomi Tahara

This curved sofa was created by the Milan-based designer Hiroomi Tahara for the Tokyo furniture company Yamakawa Rattan. The folded backrest is made of rattan, an all-natural choice. Though found only in rainforests in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra, the material is considered eco-friendly because it grows back more quickly, meaning it can be harvested and replenished without depleting the habitat. Applied in this furniture design, the rattan gives the back and armrests of the couch an organic shape and texture. Additionally, the curve of the backrest creates a visually interesting shadow and a fold for casually storing magazines and books. The comfortable furnishing also features a thick white cushion and delicate black legs. Here it is pictured with Svenskt Tenn cushions, illustrating how the design pairs well with bold colors and patterns. The sofa will be presented at the 2015 Milan Design Week.
