The Plycelain Ceramic Collection

A series of ceramic products inspired by both traditional decorations and plywood patterns.

Designed by Chicago-based product designer and artist Yuting Chang, Plycelain is a beautifully understated collection of ceramic tableware made with a creative twist. Unlike classic porcelain items that boast decorations on the exterior, traditionally in blue and white colors, this series has a multi-layered design that embeds the decorative patterns inside the porcelain. Coined by the designer, the collection’s name combines plywood and porcelain in a new term. Plycelain celebrates the tradition of ceramic manufacturing in a contemporary design that also makes the most of slip casting techniques.

Using multiple layers to build each product, the designer created objects that reveal line patterns on cut sections. Alternating blue and cream colors come to the surface on the rims, plate edges, and handles. Resembling the structure of plywood, the pattern gives a distinctly contemporary charm to the fine porcelain pieces. The Plycelain collection comprises several items. Apart from a mug and espresso cup with a saucer, the line also includes a plate and a bowl. Made with care using a combination of modern techniques and artisanal methods, every product displays a balanced blend of refined style and craftsmanship. At the same time, this manufacturing process offers a new way to create porcelain items. Here, mass-production techniques complement the character and individuality of handmade objects.
