The Port Dining Chair

A sculptural dining chair that draws inspiration from sailing ships.

When creating the Port dining chair, Minneapolis-based brand Blu Dot turned to the sea for inspiration. More specifically, to sailing boats and their sails that curve into the wind while they’re attached to the mast. Creative as well as refined, the chair boasts a distinctive design. Both the seat and the backrest have a striking curvature that give a sculptural look to the dining chair. While they remind of sails, the rear leg represents the mast. The curved elements enhance seating comfort and also strengthen the entire structure thanks to the way they attach to the rear legs.

Apart from these nautical hints, Port also celebrates the beauty of wood. The chair features traditional cross dowels and tenon joints in a nod to traditional craftsmanship and sophisticated woodworking. Crafted with a solid wood frame and legs, the Port dining chair features a bent plywood seat and back. Plastic glides on the feet help to protect more delicate flooring surfaces. The chair comes in three finishes. While the walnut and white oak versions have natural finishes, the black on ash design combines a painted ash veneer on bent ply with solid painted ash legs. Port comes fully assembled, and thus ready to use straight out of the box. The black ash and white oak versions cost $449, while the walnut chair costs $549. Photography© Blu Dot.
