Quarter Bench by H.C. Wang Design

This collection of furniture includes four identical benches, each a geometric quarter-circle in plan. H.C. Wang developed the benches so that they could be rearranged into any configuration, for any spatial need. But the primary objective is that they function as sociopetal elements, encouraging users to engage in conversation. When the benches are placed in a circle formation with circulation space between them, they suggest dialogue between users who, if seated, face inward towards one another. Even when the benches are arranged disparate from one another, the shape of each individual piece still promotes social interaction: if two strangers are sharing one bench, they find themselves facing each other at a 90 degree angle, a non-threatening position known to encourage interaction. Each bench seat is made of red oak, in elegant contrast to the slender legs of the stainless steel base.
