Rest Areas Captured on Film in “The Last Stop”

“The Last Stop” is a photobook in the works by Ryann Ford, a photographer based in Austin, Texas. Documenting America’s disappearing rest areas, Ford drove across the USA and captured images of more than 150 rest stops, many of which are now closed or demolished. For Ford and the scores of people who have already responded to her project, these rare pieces of architecture are more than the parking lots, bathrooms, and picnic tables one might expect. They are mid-century expressions of local culture, refreshing and educating the spirits and minds of those who pull over and take in the scene. Recognizing rest stops as a dying art, Ford set out to photograph the best of them before they are shut down by future budget cuts to highway development and replaced with monotonous gas stations and fast food chains. She shot the series with a medium-format film camera, a fittingly nostalgic choice. In the next year, she hopes to transform her collection into a large, hardcover coffee table book with approximately 100 pages and 75 full-color images. Supporters can fund the book and order prints on “The Last Stop” Kickstarter page until December 16th, 2014.
