The ultimate wellness retreat near NYC.

Located in the Hamptons, only 90 miles away from New York City, Shou Sugi Ban House welcomes guests in a holistic setting where they can relax, unwind, meditate, and embrace slow living. Even getting there is something of a treat, as the area features pastoral landscapes, vineyards, farms, and secluded beaches. This retreat near NYC occupies more than three acres in the hamlet of Water Mill, close to the Parrish Art Museum. The name refers to the traditional Japanese technique of charring wood to make it more durable, weather-resistant and maintenance-free. Here, the technique has a deeper meaning. It refers not only to transformation, but also to sustainability. Indeed, the entire retreat puts a focus on living a more grounded life in the middle of nature, with a deep appreciation for nature.

An intimate retreat – one that offers the only complete wellness program in the Hamptons – Shou Sugi Ban House aims to create a connection between personal well-being and the well-being of the planet. Inspired by the principles of wabi-sabi, the retreat blends simplicity and intimacy in understated but elegant and perfectly balanced spaces. Guests can choose between thirteen rooms, all designed with a minimalist aesthetic that puts the focus on natural materials and artisanal details. Refined and airy, the tranquil rooms boast white walls, handmade wood furniture, and carefully chosen accessories. The bathrooms have modern, freestanding soaking tubs and traditional Japanese wood tubs. Guests can also enjoy the feel of fine organic linens and plush rugs. The Guest Studios have access to a private garden that also contains a massage area.

The tranquil atmosphere continues in the common spaces. For example, the common dining area overlooks a cherry orchard, connecting the guests to nature. In the lounge area with sumptuous sofas, large windows flood the interior with natural light and also provide a direct view of the zen-like gardens. However, this wellness retreat near NYC offers much more than a supremely relaxing retreat experience. The complex includes a Healing Arts Barn, a Tea Lounge, and a Meditation Hall. The spa provides tailored treatments as well as advanced skin and body care treatments. A hydrotherapy program allows guests to experience the benefits of Japanese bathing rituals in hot or cold pools.

Shou Sugi Ban House also offers many classes that stimulate the mind and the body. These include T’ai Chi, yoga, qigong, and Pilates, to name a few. In this retreat near NYC, guests also have a strong connection to nature, whether they lounge on the solarium decks, socialize at the ceremonial fire circle, explore the organic vegetable and herb gardens, or hike through the sandy dunes close to the beach. The retreat’s restaurant also puts nature at the center of the menu. Created in a collaboration with chef Mads Refslund, the seasonal, plant-rich menu delights the senses with imaginative dishes. A must-visit place, this retreat near NYC offers a comprehensive wellness experience that nourish body, mind, and soul. Photographs© Fredrika Stjarne courtesy of Shou Sugi Ban House.
