Tadao Ando: The Colors of Light Volume 1

A visual dialogue between two masters.

Released in 1996, Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light Volume 1 featured photographs that captured the exquisite beauty of the Japanese architect’s work. Photographer Richard Pare collaborated for ten years with the internationally renowned, Pritzker Prize-winning architect to create the series. The book received an AIA Gold Medal Award and became an archetypal tome for architecture and photography lovers in equal measure. In 2018, global publisher of creative arts books Phaidon launched a new edition of the iconic work.

Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light Volume 1 features the same acclaimed images, but in digitally remastered versions. Among the 264 pages and 350 illustrations, the book also features the Tadao Ando’s original sketches and line drawings. These images provide a rare insight into the architect’s creative process. Remastered from the original negatives, the new edition’s photographs display the mastery of both artists. At the same time, they also introduce the work of the two masters to a younger generation. A must-have for architecture lovers as well as photography fans, Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light Volume 1 is currently available on the Phaidon official website in a hardback version.
