dutch design

Dating back to the 1980s, the term “Dutch design” became increasingly more widely used in the 1990s when a group of designers, design studios, architects, and brands started to gain international recognition. Among them, Droog, Marcel Wanders (who went on to also co-found Moooi), Wieki Somers, fashion designers Viktor & Rolf, or architect Rem Koolhaas. Here you can see some of the latest projects that fit into the category of contemporary Dutch design. Varied, creative, and belonging to different design fields, these projects showcase the talent and ingenuity of young and established designers working in the Netherlands today.

From art projects to tableware and solar-powered lighting, these projects are as imaginative as they are distinctive and even thought-provoking. For example, the book that features images of all the products made from a single pig. Painstakingly documented, the project puts modern industrial farming under the spotlight. Or the sustainably made chair that features a recycled plastic build. Made from reclaimed fishing nets and industrial waste, the chair is also easy to recycle at the end of its life thanks to a circular manufacturing system.

Other designs offer an elegant take on everyday objects. Dutch design at its finest, these projects include everything from a bird feeder that references architectural elements to stylish watches. Here you can also discover some innovative lighting designs. Among them a solar-powered pendant light designed with a minimalist aesthetic. Or a lamp that doubles as an artwork and attaches to a window to absorb natural light and illuminate living spaces in the evening. Another project re-imagines the classic porcelain tableware with a fresh twist. Completed with an anthracite color, cups and trays bring a contemporary edge to dining tables and kitchens.
