The Public Sauna on the Docks in Gothenburg, Sweden

Jubileumsparken 0,5, or “Jubilee Park,” is a waterfront park in Gothenburg, Sweden. The space hosts events on the pier, community gardening projects, sailing, swimming, roller derby, and now a sauna, all free and open to the public.

Recently opened in February of this year, The Public Sauna is a special draw for locals and savvy travelers. Designed by the German architectural collective raumlaborberlin, the angular shelter is dark gray like much of the surrounding architecture on the port. The small building is accessible via a winding metal ladder, an industrial detail echoing the structure of the docks, and, the interior is lit by two windows and two minimalist lamps. Altogether, the rustic design works to put people close to the water and reflect the culture of the port.
Inside, the wood-lined sauna can seat up to twenty. The park designates open sauna times for men and for women, but also takes reservations for mixed-gender friend and “hen” groups.
