A concept study from designer Michael Jantzen, the Stair-Scape Bridge casts new light on the “point A to point B” functionality of bridge. The pedestrian bridge is constructed from three structurally juxtaposed and undulating sections, the two outer pieces composed of steps while the center piece of ramps. These unconventional characteristics transform the bridge from a transitional space into an inhabitable space in which people can exercise, ride their bikes, and chat on the plateaus of the peaks and valleys. Other additional ideas include pressure-generated electricity storage from the steps that can be used to illuminate the bridge at nighttime. Though there might not be a stairway to heaven, the Stair-Scape Bridge on this earth might be the next best thing.
