Designers Luc van Hoeckel and Pim van Baarsen Malawian founded Super Local with a noble goal. The duo wanted to fulfill their goal of creating products and services for people in need all over the world. Following on the footsteps of the Bottle-Up project, the company launched the Trending Terrazzo recycled glass design range, designed in a partnership between Super Local and local craftspeople in Zanzibar. The concept maintains the use of recycled materials, especially glass collected from the island’s hotels. By mixing the colored fragments with cement, the designers created an elegant base for the range’s furniture and accessories.
The Trending Terrazzo collection includes benches, tables, and decorative objects for the hotels on the island, which previously imported their furniture. As a consequence, the project not only generates awareness about recycling and sustainability, but also allows Zanzibar’s artisans to use their skills in new, creative ways. Apart from generating more income, the initiative also helps to establish a new wave of locally produced items. Finally, Trending Terrazzo also provides further manufacturing options for the near future.
