An ingenious interior design project that shows the potential of readily available materials as a tool to create vibrant and expressive living spaces.

Working within the confines of a “one-size-fits-all” apartment building, where every living space has the same layout, standard materials and finishes, OOIIO Architecture found an ingenious solution to create a custom interior using only readily available materials. Named TUR House, this apartment in Madrid, Spain, has a bold personality that doesn’t shy away from fun color combinations, organic forms, or eye-catching textures. Additionally, the studio completed the project on a modest budget.

Using only materials that can be found in regular hardware stores, OOIIO Architecture created highly original interiors that are both elegant and playful. The highlight of the material palette, the ceramic tiles cover the floors and walls. Featuring different shapes and colors, the tiles add a vibrant feel to the décor while giving a nod to traditional Spanish ceramics. Fun elements abound, from the bedroom design that references children’s furniture and the movement of clouds, to the nearby ceiling light that draws inspiration from the sun shinning on a day with clear skies. In the living room, ceramic tiles cover the lower part of the wall, reminding of an outdoor patio. In the kitchen, the studio installed a wood-paneled countertop and also customized the cabinets with colors that match the palette of the apartment. For the furniture, the architects chose well-designed but affordable pieces.

With TUR House, OOIIO Architecture puts the focus on the importance of imagination and openness when designing interiors, especially in buildings with identical apartments. Treating the bland space like a blank canvas, the firm ultimately created an impressively original home filled with charming details, pastel colors, and rich textures. Photography by Javier de Paz.
