The Twill Chair

An imaginative chair inspired by plasticine strips and twill textiles.

Founded in 2007 by Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis, DesignByThem makes furniture, lighting, and home accessories that showcase the best of contemporary Australian design. Apart from collaborating with local designers to introduce curated collections, the two co-founders also work together to create the brand’s products. This is also the case with the Twill Chair. Referencing plasticine strips as well as the weave of twill, the chair boasts a backrest made with two tubular elements. The neatly cut ends of the curved backrest give a distinctive look to the chair. The same motif repeats in the chair’s legs and frame, while the seat features a comfortable size and rounded shape.

“We love how the double profile looks and functions. It was inspired by plasticine strips and the repetition seen in Twill weaves. It creates a sense of ornament whilst creating strength in the legs and comfort in the backrest,” explain the designers.

Apart from its eye-catching silhouette, the Twill Chair also provides a practical way to save floor space. The user can stack up to four chairs when placing the seating in storage, for more convenience. Finally, DesignByThem makes each product from FSC certified solid ash wood, with a durable 2-pack polyurethane finish in clear, color-block or stained versions. The Twill Chair comes in Natural, Black, Ultra Blue. and Silk Grey. Photographs © Pete Daly.
