Van Gogh–Roosegaarde Starry Night Bike Path

View all 10 Photos

In honor of the 125th anniversary of Vincent van Gogh’s death, Studio Roosegaarde designed this magical bike path inspired by “Starry Night.” The glow-in-the-dark cycling trail lights up the ground with swirls of blue and green that resemble the sky in van Gogh’s famous painting. A bright design, the path minimalizes the effect on the surrounding environment and eliminates the need for street lighting. Made just of concrete and faux pebbles, the road is simply sourced at the same time that it is finely crafted. This public art project is part of Daan Roosegaarde’s Smart Highway initiative and was brought to fruition with the help of the innovative construction company Heijmans. Find the “Glowing Lines” in Nuenen, the Netherlands, where van Gogh lived for two years.
