The Vega Chair

An exclusive design, re-issued for a wider audience for the first time.

In 1956, renowned architect and pioneer of Danish Modernism Vilhelm Lauritzen completed his modernist masterpiece: the Vega building in Copenhagen. That year, he also designed a minimalist, ergonomic chair for the building’s interiors. Originally used as a meeting place for the Danish labor movement, Vega transformed into a music venue in 1996. The eponymous chair, previously only found within the walls of the historic building, is now available in a reissued series. Furniture brand Carl Hansen & Søn has brought the archetypal Scandinavian design back to life, in a nod to the Vilhelm Lauritzen’s belief that architecture – and by extension, design – should serve all and not just a few. Working in a partnership with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, Carl Hansen & Søn has put the Vega Chair back into production.

The design is as elegant and distinctive as ever. It boasts Lauritzen’s signature aesthetic that embodies “form follows function” principles. Simple but full of character, the chair features a curved seat and backrest that enhance seating comfort. The chair also stacks, for more convenience. Crafted to stand up to the test of time, the Vega Chair has a durable build that features quality materials as well as long-lasting finishes. The furniture brand uses FSC-certified oak and black powder-coated steel to make each chair. The upholstery ranges from soft fabrics to warm leather, with colors including brighter hues and neutral shades. Photographs © Carl Hansen & Søn.
