The Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York (MTA) has published photos from inside the long-anticipated Second Avenue Subway. Though first planned in 1929, construction of the new subway line was repeatedly reconsidered and held off until 2007, when the MTA crew finally began digging. Today, the Eastern Manhattan tunnel is nearing completion. The project is expected to open in December 2016. Such a promise may not mean much to skeptics, yet pictures by Patrick Cashin and Rehema Trimiew show that the 16-station underground is actually taking shape. The photographs reveal wide-open caverns that will help commuters and tourists look ahead, whether their destination is Hanover Square on the Financial District side of the line or 125th Street in Harlem.
