The AnZa Concrete Coffee Machine

Over the years, home coffee machines have evolved into increasingly more sophisticated systems. In terms of design, however, their appearance has remained largely the same. With a focus on stainless steel surfaces and multi-button interfaces, these units may look high-tech, but they don’t make the hearts of design lovers flutter. San Francisco Bay Area studio Montaag aims to change that with the AnZa concrete coffee machine. An espresso maker that brings aromatic coffee scents as well as brutalist accents into modern kitchens.

Designed in a backyard shed in Berkeley, California, the espresso machine underwent four years of testing and improvement. It now offers the perfect combination of style and function in a design that proudly complements contemporary interiors. “Surprisingly little in the way of new thinking has taken place in the world of espresso machines – especially given the attention paid to progressive interior architecture and how much real estate these machines take up in your kitchen,” says Per Ivar Selvaag, Principal at Montaag.

A true conversation starter – over a cup of espresso – this concrete coffee machine has a sculptural appearance and a minimalist aesthetic. The concrete body boasts eye-catching textures, while white ceramic handles soften the design. Golden brass accents and a vintage-style hot water dial give AnZa a refined look. Apart from the brutalist version, Montaag also designed a Corian model which features a smooth white surface with wood and brass details. Both models come with IoT integration, remote access, and a program option. AnZa will be launched on Kickstarter on August 7. Backers can choose a Corian or a concrete coffee machine, with shipping set for the beginning of 2018. But if you miss out, you’ll find this beauty in the Gessato shop soon – stay tuned for more info. Images courtesy of Montaag.
